Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that may profoundly influence an individual's social interactions, communication, and behaviour. Adolescents and adults with ASD often encounter challenges in various aspects of their lives, such as:
Social Interaction – individuals with ASD may struggle with understanding and navigating social cues, forming relationships, and engaging in reciprocal social communication. They may find it challenging to interpret nonverbal communication and exhibit difficulties in developing and maintaining friendships.
Communication – communication difficulties in ASD may manifest as challenges in verbal and nonverbal communication. Some individuals may have delayed speech development, limited use of gestures, or face challenges in sustaining conversations and expressing emotions effectively.
Restricted and Repetitive Behaviours – ASD is often characterised by the presence of repetitive behaviours, stereotyped movements, and a strong adherence to routines. Individuals with ASD may display intense interests in specific topics, objects, or activities, often to the exclusion of others.
These symptoms may have a significant impact on various facets of an individual's life, affecting academic performance, social relationships, and daily functioning. Without appropriate intervention, individuals with ASD may face challenges in adapting to new situations and may be at an increased risk for anxiety, depression, and difficulties in independent living.
How is ASD Diagnosed?
At The Psych Edit, our Psychologists employ a comprehensive assessment process to diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder. We utilise established diagnostic tools, such as the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition), and conduct interviews with the client and, where applicable, their parents or caregivers. The ADOS-2 was developed to provide an opportunity to observe symptoms and behaviours associated with ASD in a consistent manner across different clients, clinicians, and locations. The ADOS-2 is currently considered the “gold standard” in the assessment of ASD.
At The Psych Edit, ASD testing takes place over three sessions, using the ADOS-2 and the ADI-R to perform a full ASD assessment. The clinician then scores, interprets the results and provides a full written report.
Kindly be aware that The Psych Edit provides ASD assessments specifically designed for fully verbal clients aged 10 and older.
